What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient and complex practice, rooted in Indian philosophy.

It began as a spiritual practice but has become popular as a way of promoting physical and mental well-being. The word “yoga” actually means “yoke” or “union” in Sanskrit. The intended yoking was that of one’s mind and the divine, a self-transcendent quality creating a pure state of consciousness in which the awareness of “I” disappears into a sense of divine essence.

Yoga as practiced in the United States today typically emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana). There are many different yoga styles, ranging from gentle practices such as Yin Yoga to physically demanding ones such as Hot Yoga.

Sunflower Yoga will offer many different yoga styles to suit the needs of the Springfield community. We will also offer specialized yoga classes such as yoga for kids, yoga during pregnancy and yoga for athletes.
